Internship Spotlight: From Bronze to Murals — Two Students, Two Incredible Internships

At KyCAD, we believe in learning by doing—and our students are doing big things. Recently, two of our talented creatives, Beige and Kerstin, dove into hands-on internships that pushed their practice beyond the classroom and into the real world.

Beige x Damon Paints LLC
Our students are seriously the coolest. Case in point? Beige, who just wrapped up her second internship—this time with Louisville-based muralist Damon Thompson of Damon Paints LLC. Beige's latest project, Escape the Cage – Float the Peel, now on view at Preston Art Center, is a must-see.

Damon is known for transforming everyday garages and alleyways into vibrant public art pieces. With spray paint as his medium and the city as his canvas, Damon creates community-centered murals that invite people to pause, reflect, and reconnect. Working alongside him, Beige gained an inside look at the world of street art—from concept sketch to finished wall.

Kerstin x Maynard Studios
Meanwhile, Kerstin took a different—but equally inspiring—path. She interned at Maynard Studios, where acclaimed artists and blacksmiths Matthew & Karine Maynard craft custom metalwork that blurs the line between sculpture and structure.

At the studio, Kerstin got hands-on with centuries-old techniques, learning how to weld, dress bronze, and soon—oil gild. From forging iron to finishing fine details, she experienced the artistry and discipline of working with metal under the mentorship of true masters.

These internships reflect what we value most: meaningful, real-world experience that shapes both artistic voice and professional confidence.
