Helpful Terms

We recognize that the application process might seem challenging, and that selecting the right undergraduate program is a major decision. To help minimize any confusion, we’ve put together this list of helpful terms that you can refer to as you navigate your college search. Every institution is different when it comes to application steps, deadlines and the overall enrollment process but these terms should all remain the same.

INTERNSHIP
A professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)
The average of a student’s final grades in all their courses, calculated by adding the final grades divided by the number of credit hours.
FACULTY
The teaching staff of a college, including professors, both full-time and adjunct.
CREDITS/CREDIT HOURS
Units of measure used by the college to indicate the amount of instructional and learning time required to achieve the student learning outcomes of a course.
COMMENCEMENT
A formal graduation ceremony.
COHORT
A group of students working through a curriculum together in the same degree program.
CURRICULUM
Classes or subject matter that is taken within a program at a college or university.
STUDENT ORIENTATION
An event held prior to the start of classes where students can learn more about the college or university systems, facilities, policies and people. 
ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT
A student may submit an enrollment deposit to commit to enrolling at a college or university and hold their spot in the incoming class.
ADMITTED STUDENT
A student who has completed the application process and been granted approval or acceptance to attend an individual college or university.
BACHELOR’S DEGREE
An undergraduate degree typically requiring four years of full – time study in coursework specified by the degree granting institution.
UNDERGRADUATE
A type of student enrolled at a college or university who is seeking an associates or bachelor’s degree.
